A composite membrane used in diaphragm pumps bends up and down over a fuel bowl. The bowl contains an input and an outlet with check valves to guarantee that fluid only flows in one direction. A vacuum is created as the diaphragm raises, drawing gasoline from the fuel tank into the fuel bowl.

A diaphragm pump's ability to pull fuel from the tank is its main advantage. The diaphragm pump is self-priming because, in contrast to other types of pumps, it produces a vacuum in the fuel bowl, allowing it to swiftly draw more gasoline into the pump and the engine if you run out of gas. Additionally, filthy gasoline is not a problem because the pump cannot be seriously harmed by it (the engine may, but not the pump), as the fuel does not pass through any moving components.
