The Fuel Pump Diaphram 18-7840 is an innovative craft for Mercury and Yamaha outboard engines used with Sierra 18-7787 Fuel Pump Kit.

Diaphragm pumps work using a composite membrane that bends up and down over a fuel bowl. The bowl contains an input and an output, each with a check valve to ensure a one-way fluid flow. As the diaphragm rises, it generates a vacuum that draws gasoline from the fuel tank into the fuel bowl.

A faulty fuel pump diaphragm will cause the fuel pump to provide less fuel pressure than is required for proper engine performance. Because of the low fuel pressure, less gas given to the engine will result in fuel starvation and a too lean air-fuel combination at the carburetor.
