Retaining rings are specially designed components used to hold various assemblies together. They are precisely engineered to position, locate, and maintain parts on shafts or bores. The rings are inserted into a groove, and the other assembly components are held in place by the crew.
Spiral, tapered, and constant section retaining rings are retaining ring designs. Unlike standard stamp rings, Spiral rings do not have ears or lugs that can interfere with the assembly. Tapered section rings are designed with compressible lugs that give them a circular shape in the groove and grip tightly along the edge. Heavy-duty applications are best suited to constant section retaining rings. Some specialized designs are also available, such as those with a very shallow groove for use on thin-walled component sections.
