A form of mechanical hardware called a door latch is used to secure and maintain the closure of doors. A door latch prevents the door from swinging while still enabling regular operation when the latch is released. It accomplishes this by using a fastener fastened to two typically separated surfaces, most usually the door and the frame. Although locks and latches have traditionally been in tandem, modern latches merge the two functions into a single piece of hardware. Latches, which also offer a secure connection, allow for the controlled opening and closing of doors.
