The circlip is a retaining ring or fastener made up of a semi-flexible metal ring with an open ring that can snap into place and insert into a machined slot on a dowel or other part to allow rotation but prevent lateral motion. Removing a snap ring or c-clip is extremely difficult without using a tool.
