When a fault in the flow is detected, it interrupts the high flow of electricity. When the surge of current trips, it automatically detects current flow opening the circuit if it exceeds the capacity of the wires. When it opens a circuit, it creates a break in a very high resistance air gap that prevents all electricity from flowing through that wire.
