Oars propel the boat when rowing. In contrast to canoeing and kayaking, where the athlete's shoulders or hands serve as the pivot point, oars require a fixed or sliding fulcrum, an oarlock or rowlock affixed to the side of the vessel, to transport power. Softwoods (pines, fir, and spruces) and hardwoods make wood oars (ash, oak & basswood). Hardwoods like oak and ash grow slowly compared to softwoods, which often grow quickly. Although light, the softwoods like basswood don't have the same strength and flexibility as ash.
