Water Pump Kit - Sierra Marine Engine Parts - 18-3429 (118-3429)

Any marine engine's water pump supplies the entire amount of cooling water required to prevent overheating. This can be accomplished either directly in an open-cooled engine or indirectly through the heat exchanger in a closed-cooled engine. In either scenario, the impeller's vanes may eventually become worn, "assume a shape," or, in the worst situations, separate. The engine is at risk of overheating if the impellers cannot supply a consistent flow of cooling water to it.

The engine's driveshaft is keyed to a rubber impeller within the pump. The pump is rotated by the driveshaft inside a stainless steel-lined plastic casing. Through the intakes and up into the housing, the pump draws water.
