The most frequently mishandled type of seal in automobile work is the crush washer. They are present anywhere a threaded fastener must seal out a liquid; the crush washer found beneath the oil drain plug on autos is the most typical example. When the plug is tight, the flexible copper washer stretches to close gaps and create a liquid-tight seal. The fact that these are one-time-use goods makes them overused. If you're cautious, you might be able to reuse them once more, but after that, the washer becomes work-hardened and stops deforming. Oil pan crush washers are inexpensive and rectified with every oil change; they are typically available on a rack in parts stores.
