The V-ribbed concept combines some of the best characteristics of flat belts and V-belts. It essentially uses a flat belt with a series of V-shaped ribs that run the length of the belt on the drive surface. These thin ribbons work efficiently and run fast. But more importantly, the belt ribs are entirely on the pulleys, so the tension cords are fully supported. There is no wedge effect. Full support for the cable provides high load-bearing capacity. Theoretically, this structure can provide the highest power of any belt when reinforced with high-strength fibres. However, there has been no commercial demand for such extraordinary performance capabilities in this type of belt to date.
Exemption from the wedge effect with V-rib belts increases tension requirements, but not to the levels required for flat belts. Friction is reportedly independent of the contact area. Nevertheless, the V-rib shape significantly increases the friction between the belt and the pulley compared to a flat belt. As a result, the tension requirement is about 20 ° higher than the V-belt requirement. In addition, the ribs ensure that the belt moves smoothly. This process means that alignment is less important than a flat belt. Flat belt alignment requirements are more critical than V-belt alignment requirements.
