The last part of the powertrain forward is a shaft bearing, also known as a Cutless bearing, which is brass or composite bearing with rubber lining through which the propeller shaft rotates. The inner surface of cylindrical bearings is typically grooved to allow lubricating water to pass through. When the bearing, the engine, and the shaft are appropriately aligned, the result is vibration-free operation when the engine is running. Shaft support comes from the bearing assembly.
