Tooth lock washers have teeth-like serrations on the inside or outside, similar to serrated washers. They go between the bolt head/nut and the mating surface, and the bolted joint is secured the same way an unsecured nut is screwed up. Hard surfaces flatten the teeth, preventing them from biting into the exterior and locking the joint while washers operate best with the soft outside. The internal tooth lock washer intends to keep a nut or bolt head from loosening due to the teeth's strut action. The teeth also absorb shock or vibration and abrade the grounding surface in electrical grounding applications to improve the electrical connection.
