Almost as soon as the wheel was invented in antiquity, the need for thrust washers developed. These sturdy flat washer-shaped bearings prevent wheels from sliding off axles when the bearing that carries the radial load, such as a bushing or roller bearing, does not have specific accommodations for axial or thrust loads. The application determines the type of thrust washer. The choice of material is influenced by several variables, including speed, load, and temperature. Plastic, brass, bronze, stainless steel, graphite, and many other materials can all be used to make thrust washers. Thrust washers are from low- and high-carbon steel. Case hardening or through hardening are two options for carbon steel.
