The thermostat is a valve that regulates the outboard's operating temperature by opening to allow cool water to pass through the engine and closing to prevent the water flow from preventing the motor from getting a satisfactory operational temperature The coolant intake within the engine compartment is controlled by the thermostat housing. Coolant is responsible for transferring heat from the engine to the radiator compartment. Between the engine and the radiator lies the thermostat housing. When the motor starts to cool below the ambient temperature, the thermostat housing closes. The closed-off part of the engine allows coolant to properly flow and pass through the machine. If you can't recall when you last replaced the thermostat on your outboard, consider yourself lucky if the engine is still running. Thermostats for outboard motors are an often-overlooked but critical component for maintaining the engine's temperature and guaranteeing top performance.
