The thermostat in an engine controls coolant flow and regulates engine temperature. It must prevent coolant from flowing to the radiator until the engine has warmed up. High-temperature readings and overheated engines; low-temperature readings and underheated engines; temperature fluctuating unpredictably; coolant leaks around the thermostat housing or under the engine are all signs of a damaged or failing thermostat. NOTE: In a vertical installation, if the thermostat has a jiggle pin, check valve, or other devices to assist in bleeding air from the system, the jiggle pin should be situated at north or noon.
