The thermostat is for Johnson/Evinrude outboard engines with a temperature rating of 160 degrees. It is designed to hold the cooling water in the block until it reaches the temperature set by the engine manufacturer. The thermostat fails when it is overheating during use. This happens when a blockage or a damaged component within the cooling system to low engine oil or a faulty thermostat. The engine loses heat to the radiator and takes longer to warm up. It is between 50 to 60 degrees Celsius. The thermostat isolates the engine from the radiator until it has reached minimum temperature.
