The temperature of the coolant/antifreeze mix in the cooling system is measured by a coolant temperature sensor, also known as an ECTS sensor (engine coolant temperature sensor). The ECU provides a regulated voltage to the CTS to acquire an accurate reading of the current engine temperature. The ECU can monitor temperature changes because the sensor's resistance fluctuates with temperature. After determining the coolant temperature, the ECU changes the fuel injection, fuel mix, and ignition timing, as well as turning on and off the electric cooling fan. This information is also used to provide an accurate engine temperature measurement to a dashboard gauge.
