The majority of PWCs and powerboats feature a safety switch. If the user exits the powerboat or PWC, this switch will turn the engine off. The operator's wrist or life jacket is well-connected to the safety switch by a lanyard. If an operator exits the vessel, the engine will shut down when the lanyard pulls from the switch. On a PWC, using a lanyard lowers the possibility of propeller strikes and other accidents. The PWC will likely go in hard, fast circles, posing an immediate threat of death from propeller strike if an operator is not wearing a lanyard and falls from the vehicle. All PWC operators should follow the law to wear an engine cutoff lanyard, also known as a "kill switch," which will turn the engine off if the operator falls off.
