Cylinder liners (also known as sleeves) are thin metal cylinder-shaped parts inserted into the engine block to form the inner wall of the cylinder. An engine can also be sleeveless,' with the cylinder walls formed by the engine block with a wear-resistant coating, such as Nikasil or plasma-sprayed bores. The cylinder liner wears due to the rubbing action of the piston rings and piston skirt during usage. This wear is reduced by the thin oil coating that coats the cylinder walls and a layer of glaze that builds naturally when the engine is run in. In some engines, the cylinder liner gets worn or damaged. Another repair method is sleeving the cylinder, which involves boring it and then placing a sleeve in the additional area left by the boring.
