Sleeves are thin metal components in the shape of a cylinder that is put into the engine block to create the cylinder's inner wall. An engine can also be sleeveless, with the engine block acting as the cylinder walls, and has a coat in a wear-resistant material like Nikasil or plasma-sprayed bores. As a result of the piston rings and skirt rubbing against each other while in use, the cylinder liner becomes worn. The cylinder walls are protected from wear by a thin oil coating and a layer of glaze that develops naturally as the engine is run. The cylinder liner wears out or is damaged in some machines. Sleeve the cylinder is a different repair technique that involves drilling the cylinder and adding a sleeve to the extra space.
