A skeg is a fin-shaped component of small boat outboard motors. These boat parts are located beneath the boat's propellers and protect both the propellers and the motor's gearcase. A skeg is also a keel-like device attached to the stern of small watercraft such as open-water kayaks, surfboards, and windsurfers. Skegs aid in navigation and control in these situations. Outboard motor skegs are frequently damaged when boats collide with rocks and other underwater debris. As a result, repairing or replacing a skeg is fairly common, with varying degrees of complexity and cost. The skeg on your outboard or stern drive motor performs two critical functions. The skeg functions as a precise rudder, allowing the motor to turn your boat precisely and safely. Second, the skeg protects your propeller from debris in the water and from running aground.
