A shift mechanism is a gear installed on a shaft within a power transmission device's housing. A shift rod is placed parallel to the shaft through a hole in the housing and is capable of axial movement between a first and second position, causing corresponding gear movement. A locking lever with an extended end that can extend beyond the interior surface of the shift rod is pivotally placed within a groove in the shift rod. When the shift rod is in the first position, the locking lever is pivotally biased, causing the extended end to overlie the housing adjacent to the hold.
