With propeller shaft seals, the propeller shaft can leave the boat and rotate while remaining dry. As the prop shaft exits the vessel, the shaft seal also lubricates it (much like a stuffing box). The propeller shaft seals are well-made consist of a housing with O ring lip seals and face seals. The two most common types of seals are face seals and lip seals. As opposed to face seals, which use a collar fastened to the shaft that presses up against a surface on the articulated hose's end, both types use an articulated rubber sleeve to keep the water out. A small quantity of water forms on the contact between the stainless and the carbon, lubricating the seal.
