A carburetor seal is a mechanical seal that fills the gap between two or more mating surfaces, preventing leakage from or into the joined objects when compressed. It is a deformable material used in mechanical assemblies to create and maintain a static seal under varying operating conditions.
Seals enable "less-than-perfect" mating surfaces on machine parts by filling irregularities. Gaskets are frequently made by cutting sheet materials. Given the potential cost and safety implications of faulty or leaking gaskets, the appropriate gasket material must be chosen to meet the application's requirements.
The carb-to-manifold gasket is probably the second biggest potential air leak in a carbureted engine, after the manifold gasket itself. The carb gasket is in charge of providing that delicate boundary between where air should and should not be; a failure here can ruin your engine's entire day.
