A steel disk with teeth known as a trigger wheel is mounted to the crankshaft or camshaft. The ECU receives electrical pulses from the wheel's passing teeth that indicate the engine's speed and direction at any given moment. The systems' layout is quite straightforward, and they trigger OEM ignition systems similarly. The harmonic balancer is mounted with a trigger wheel that rotates with the crankshaft and has spokes, studs, magnets, or holes.
