The piston rings work to transfer heat from the heated piston into the engine's cooled cylinder wall or block. The engine coolant eventually receives the heat energy that originated in the piston groove after passing through the piston ring and cylinder wall. This heat transfer function is essential for maintaining the stability and proper temperature of the piston and piston rings and preserving the sealing capability. Although some oil is necessary to lubricate the piston rings, it is preferable to limit this quantity to a minimum. The excess oil is kept out of the combustion chamber. In this approach hazardous emissions are lessened, and oil consumption is within reasonable bounds.
