Rain caps Volvo Penta are hinged coverings that prevent precipitation and extraneous objects from entering the exhaust discharge piping of diesel engines while still permitting maximum exhaust flow. A rain cap or protective cover device for an internal combustion engine's exhaust stack. It moves between a standby protection position and an operating position. A pair of rearwardly extending arms in the standby position force a fairing of the rain cap to cover an exhaust stack outlet to which the rain cap is pivotally connected. Winglets attached to the arm interact with airflow past the stack in the operating state to lift the arms and move the fairing to a comfortable position around the exhaust stack. The fairing shapes interact aerodynamically with the airflow and create a low-pressure zone at the exhaust stack's exit.
