A boat's fuel pump transfers fuel from the fuel tank to the internal combustion engine's carburetor or fuel injector. Low-pressure mechanical pumps outside the gasoline tank are commonly well-used with carbureted engines. Electric fuel pumps located inside the tank are widely well-used by fuel-injected engines. Some fuel-injected machines also feature two fuel pumps: a low-pressure/high-volume supply pump inside the tank and a high-pressure/low-volume pump on or close to the engine. Inefficient and polluting, a machine will run rough and prosperous if the fuel pressure is too high because it won't consume all the fuel pumps. The engine could stall, misfire, or run lean if the pressure is too low.
