A drain plug should be taken to drain liquid from a tank, such as a motor oil pan or sump. Sometimes the tiniest components can cause the most trouble. A sealing gasket is secured to the bottom or side of the engine oil pan and a threaded bolt made of soft metal, such as aluminum, serves as the oil drain plug. The number of stripped oil drain plugs rose over time as auto manufacturers switched from heavy-duty stamped steel to lightweight stamped aluminum oil pans. It doesn't take much torque with a slightly off-center bolt to break threads.
