The diesel engine cooled with fresh water in the schematic freshwater cooling system. The heat exchanger then cools the freshwater with the outboard water. The heat from the freshwater is absorbed by the cooler, raw water, forced through the heat exchanger jacket and out the exhaust. Raw water refers to the water in which the boat is afloat, whether it is salt or fresh; both use to keep the engine cool. Every component of the cooling system is critical to its operation and should inspect regularly. This plug should be visually inspected before each start-up and replaced as soon as possible. The plug must be properly installed as a backup safety measure to prevent water or coolant from leaking into the engine.
