Oars and paddles share a similar structural makeup, however, oarlocks are used to secure them to the boat. Although rowboats are the ones that are traditionally associated with oars, other boats also use them in contests. Rowboats, sweep-oar boats, and sculls are the most common boats that use oars. The most widely used are rowing boats, which can be for different activities, including sports, fishing, and leisure. Oars are typically fastened to boats using oarlocks. Similar to sweep-oar boats, which have oars fixed to the bow and stern, this also holds for normal rowboats with oars mounted on the sides. Naturally, this also holds for sculls, even those with many oars.
