The seat is frequently a brass plug with a properly designed hole for the pin with a pointed end, and the needle is the second contract for fuel entering a carburetor after the seat. To stop fuel from entering the carb at a predetermined level, the needle's tip seals against the conical seat. It prevents flooding in the engine and engine compartment. The tapered shape of the needle controls the amount of fuel that rises through the main jet and the needle jet. As it ascends, the opening widens, adding more gas to the mixture.
