The needle and seat are the first contacts for fuel entering a carburetor, and the seat is often a brass plug with a correctly shaped hole for the pin with a pointed end. The needle features a tip that seals against the seat of the conical seat to prevent fuel from entering the carb at a set level. It stops the engine and engine compartment from flooding. The amount of fuel that rises through the main jet and the needle jet is controlled by the needle's tapered shape. The opening widens as it ascends, adding additional gas to the mixture.
