A carburetor is a tool used to feed gasoline and air into spark-ignited engines. A liquid fuel storage chamber, a choke, an idle (or slow-running) jet, the main jet, a venturi-shaped air-flow restriction, and an accelerator pump are the common parts of carburetors. A valve that is activated by a float regulates the amount of fuel in the storage chamber. The choke, a butterfly valve, reduces the intake and allows a fuel-rich charge to be drawn into the cylinders when a cold engine is started. The fuel flows out of the idling jet into the intake air resulting from reduced pressure near the partially closed throttle valve.
