There are two types of splines in a HUB 19 Spline COBRA '94+ & Volvo Penta SX (VS-47): internal and external. They both function to convey torque through a system. Each form of spline has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Involute splines, for example, provide more surface contact for improved torque transfer and a design that decreases the chance of misalignment with mating elements. The hub is a component that connects the propeller blades on the ship's exterior. The blades are rotating through the water as the hub spins. The hub connects to the marine shaft via the stern tube and surrounding bearings for torque transfer. Special safeguards are required to ensure that vital fluids such as oil and hydraulic liquids are protected from water intrusion and leakage.
