An engine's vacuum is used to draw gasoline through the carburetor's metering jets, and it is then introduced at the highest point of vacuum and airflow to mix it with the air in a precise amount. A faulty carburetor gasket prevents fuel from escaping but allows air to enter where the vacuum signal is most crucial. The carb-to-manifold gasket is the second biggest potential air leak next to the manifold gasket itself. The carburetor gasket is responsible for drawing the delicate line between where air should and shouldn't be present.
