An effective arrangement for the initial separation of water and particulate matter in a lower chamber is part of a combination fuel filter and water separator that is particularly useful at the upstream; suction side of a fuel pump. The fluid then passes up through a backflow-preventing check valve and into an upper chamber where fine filtration occurs.
