Almost every fuel-powered vehicle on the road in the last century used a fuel tank sending unit in conjunction with a dash gauge to inform the driver how much gas has been left in the tank. Trucks, tractors, boats, motorcycles, and planes use the same basic fuel sending unit to send fuel level information to the gauge. The materials used to construct your daily driver's fuel tank sender may have changed, but the fuel level sender hasn't changed all that much. The fuel sending unit is primarily a float system for determining the amount of fuel in a tank. The level is read by sending an Ohms resistance signal through wiring from the sensor/sending unit to the fuel gauge.
