There are exhaust risers on every marine inboard engine. The exhaust riser has two purposes: first, it prevents water from backing up into the engine through the exhaust pipe; second, it introduces cooling water into the system of exhaust exit piping. Before making a severe turn in the direction of the boat's back, the risers rise six to eight inches above the manifold. The majority of clogging issues happen at this acute angle.
If you discover that your boat has extensions, you cannot remove them since they increase the height above the waterline, preventing water from flowing back into your engine. If risers are required, the hull design and engine installation will be affected.
