The distributor cap, which also houses the contacts between them and the spark plug wires, protects the internal rotor of the distributor. The distributor rotor and cap support the high volts of energy and distribute them to the appropriate spark plugs while keeping the contents of the distributor isolated from the engine and maintaining the functional portions of the distributor in a clean and organized manner. The spark plugs ignite the fuel mixture using the spark from the distributor, which then causes the engine to run. High voltage travels through the entire distributor system while your car is in motion, but if there is a problem, this voltage won't be sent to the right spark plugs, preventing your engine from starting. Typically, a damaged distributor rotor and cap result in a few indications that alert the driver to the possibility of needing repairs.
