A check valve is a device that permits only one direction of fluid flow. This valve has two ports, one for the media inlet and one for the media output. The main aim of a check valve is to avoid backflow in the system. They are usually referred to as 'one-way valves or 'non-return valves' since they only allow media flow in one direction. A check valve requires a pressure differential to function. To open the valve, more pressure is on the input side than on the output side. When the pressure on the output side is higher, the valve closes (or when the pressure on the input side is insufficient). Depending on the valve type, the closure mechanism varies. They don't need a handle, lever, actuator, or even a human to work.
