A simple bearing, or bushing, is a mechanical component that decreases friction between rotating shafts and stationary support components. It usually uses a soft metal or plastic and an oil layer to hold the rotating shaft on the hardened shaft journal. On heavy-duty wheels that require tight load-bearing tolerances, bushings are used. Self-lubricating bushings are perfect for low-maintenance applications. A consistent pattern of indents on the bushing's surface creates grease reservoirs, allowing the bushing to self-lubricate. Bushings are thin tubes to improve efficiency and reduce vibration and noise in machines with rotating or sliding shafts. Drill jigs, hydraulic external gear pumps, and motors can use bushings for drilling operations.
