A castellated nut, sometimes known as a castle nut, has three notches on one end, giving it the appearance of crenelated castle battlements. Castellated nuts are a sort of vibration-resistant positive locking device that maintains the nut in place. These parts are used in conjunction with a screw with a radial hole that has been pre-drilled. The nut is fastened, and a pin is threaded through the grooves and the screw hole to keep the nut from spinning. A castellated nut has a smaller diameter cylindrical top where the notches are located, as well as a higher profile than a standard nut of its size. It's similar to a slotted nut, but the castellated nut's rounder part allows the pin to be attached tighter to the nut than a slotted nut permits.
