A ball bearing is a form of rolling-element bearing that carries loads, lowers friction, and positions moving machine elements while facilitating motion. Ball bearings employ balls to separate two "races" to reduce surface contact and friction across moving planes. They are cost-effective, ideal for high-volume production, and fabricated to tight tolerances. Home appliances, tiny motors, machine tools, aircraft and automobiles, commercial machines, and farm and construction equipment all employ sintered-metal self-lubricating bearings. Friction is minimized by using ball bearings instead of sliding bearings. The friction coefficient of the balls is much lower than that of two flat surfaces sliding against each other.
