The ball bearing's primary role is to support axial and radial loads while reducing rotational friction. It supports the ball with at least two races and transfers the load through the ball. One race is usually attached to a spinning component (such as a shaft or hub), while the other is stationary. The ball revolves in tandem with the race. The coefficient of friction is lower because the ball rotates than two flat surfaces rubbing against one other. Ball bearings have the problem of the ball "flattening" over time and finally failing if the outer race is subjected to extreme pressure. Ball bearings are made up of four major components: two rings/races, balls (rolling elements), and a retainer (the ball separator).
