Although it has a design similar to a conventional washer, a fender washer varies in that the outside diameter is typically significantly greater than the central hole. With this construction, a fender washer can be positioned underneath the bolt or nut's head to help distribute the forces when tightening. As a result of the fastener's enlarged exterior diameter, an additional bearing surface is available to disperse the load over a wider range of soft or thin materials.
