A pulley, gear, sprocket, or other rotating power device's hub and a shaft are connected by a small metal block or wedge known as a keystock. It generates driving torque while impeding motion. A key seat is a precut slot in the shaft into which one part of the key fits. The remaining portion slides into a keyway in the hub. The flat, semicircular Woodruff keys can rock into position and adapt to an angled spine without unseating themselves. Machine keys are long and have tapered gib heads, square ends, or rounded ends. For fixing sprockets, gears, pulleys, and step keys, often referred to as offset keys, are precisely cut with steps notched at regular intervals.
